How to prepare for the SAFE test for free
- Start with the official outline. Print the NMLS content outline and use it as your checklist. The five areas are weighted: Mortgage Loan Origination Activities 27%, Federal Mortgage Related Laws 24%, General Mortgage Knowledge 20%, Ethics 18%, and Uniform State Content 11%.
- Do the 10 NMLS sample questions cold. The questions in Appendix B of the MLO Testing Handbook show you the style of the real test before you start drilling.
- Fill gaps with free guides. Read the MLO Pass study guides for the topics you missed, such as TRID timing, RESPA Section 8, ECOA, and exam math.
- Practice under pressure. Play the Shot Clock Showdown (10 questions, 24 seconds each), then try Mometrix's free practice test and the 3 sample questions in OnCourse's article for more reps.
- Use a free plan for one area. The MLO Pass free plan opens one content block, one study game, and 8 AI Trainer questions a day, which is enough to work through one weak area.
- Double-check anything user-made. If a Quizlet card or forum answer surprises you, check it against the outline or your 20-hour course materials.
When a paid full mock exam is worth it
Free resources cover the content. What they mostly don't give you is a full-length, timed exam weighted like the real one. A paid mock is worth it when:
- You've finished (or nearly finished) your 20-hour course and read the outline, and you need to know if you're actually ready to book.
- You haven't practiced pacing. The real test is 120 questions in 190 minutes, about 95 seconds a question. Ten-question quizzes don't build that stamina.
- You want a score for each content area, weighted like the real test, so you know where to spend your last week.
- A miss would cost you. Every attempt costs $110, and NMLS makes you wait 30 days after a first or second failed attempt and 180 days after a third (NMLS retake rules).
When to skip it

- You haven't been through the outline yet. Use the free resources first so a paid mock tells you something useful.
