Getting licensed as a mortgage loan originator means paying four kinds of costs: a pre-licensing course, the SAFE MLO Test, NMLS processing fees and your state’s fees. The calculator below adds them up. All NMLS fees were checked against NMLS pages on October 18, 2026.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Pass the first time. Every retake is another $110 and at least 30 days of waiting.
  • Don’t pay twice for prep. A basic course plus standalone prep can cost less than a premium bundle. Compare options on the provider comparison.
  • Ask about sponsorship. Many lenders reimburse licensing costs for new loan officers they hire.

Where MLO Pass fits

MLO Pass is exam prep, not an NMLS-approved pre-licensing course. It does not count toward your 20 required hours. Take your PE with any approved provider, then use MLO Pass to get ready for the SAFE MLO Test itself.

A one-time $99 unlock gets you about 1,154 practice questions across all five content areas, full mock exams, an AI Trainer and a live readiness score. You pay once and have access for life, with no subscription. Use code MLOPASS for a $20 credit. Start at app.mlopass.com, or try the free 20-question practice test first.

NMLS charges a $35 annual processing fee per state license. You also pay your state's renewal fee and complete at least 8 hours of continuing education each year.

What are state license fees?

Each state sets its own application and license fees, and they vary widely. For example, California DFPI lists a $300 MLO application fee. Look up your state agency's fees through the NMLS State Licensing Requirements page.
