You do not schedule the SAFE MLO test with Prometric first. You pay for it in NMLS, which opens a 180-day window, and only then can you book a seat. Most of the expensive mistakes people make happen in that window: letting it run out, rescheduling one day too late, or showing up with an ID that does not match their NMLS account. Each of those costs the $110 fee.

This guide walks through scheduling the NMLS SAFE exam step by step: creating the enrollment, booking with Prometric, the reschedule and cancel deadlines, testing accommodations, and what to do if an emergency makes you miss the appointment. Everything below comes from the NMLS MLO Testing Handbook and the SAFE MLO Testing FAQ, which we checked on October 22, 2026.

The short version

  • You need an NMLS account and NMLS ID before you can enroll.
  • Pay the $110 test fee in NMLS (Testing Home, then Pay for Test, then National Test with UST). The fee is not refundable or transferable, and you cannot pay at the test center.
  • Paying opens a 180-day enrollment window. You must accept the Candidate Agreement, schedule, and take the test inside it, or the window closes.
  • Book through NMLS (Manage Test Appointment, then Schedule – Test Center), which sends you to Prometric, or call Prometric at 1-877-671-6657.
  • Reschedule or cancel by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, two calendar days before your appointment. Late changes and no-shows close the window and forfeit the fee.
  • Since October 1, 2024, online proctored testing is only for candidates approved for ADA testing accommodations. Everyone else tests at a Prometric center.

Before you schedule: what you need

NMLS lists two things you must have before you can pay for a SAFE test: an individual NMLS account and your NMLS ID number. If you do not have an account yet, request one through the NMLS Resource Center first. Your NMLS ID shows next to your name in the upper-left corner once you log in to NMLS.

The email address on that account matters. NMLS uses it to send your test enrollment and test result notifications, so use one you actually check.

Two common questions come up here:

  • Do I have to finish pre-licensing education first? No. The NMLS FAQ says you are not required to take a pre-licensure course before the test. You still have to complete at least 20 hours of pre-licensing education to get licensed, and your state may require more. Our MLO license requirements by state table lists state hours, and our pre-licensing course providers comparison can help you pick one.
  • Do I need a separate test for each state? No. The SAFE MLO test only has to be passed once, and it meets the testing requirement for every state agency. You can also take it at any Prometric center, regardless of which state you want to be licensed in.

Step 1: Pay for the test enrollment in NMLS

The test enrollment is what you buy. Here is the path NMLS gives for individuals:

  1. Log in to your NMLS account.
  2. Click the Testing Home tile in the Quick Links section.
  3. Click Pay for Test.
  4. Click National Test with UST, then Add to Cart.
  5. Click Proceed to Candidate Agreement, review it, and click I Accept.
  6. Click Pay Invoice and complete payment.

The current fee is $110. NMLS states that payments are not accepted at the test center, and that enrollment fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. If your employer has access to your NMLS record, the company can create and pay for the enrollment instead. You still have to accept the Candidate Agreement from your own account before anyone can schedule the test. For the full cost of getting licensed, including the test, use our NMLS license cost calculator.

Step 2: Understand your 180-day window

Once NMLS processes the payment, a 180-day test enrollment window opens. During those 180 days you must accept the Candidate Agreement, schedule, and take the test. If you do not, the window closes and you have to pay for a new one.

In most cases the window starts on the day you pay. There is one exception: if you recently failed the test, the new window starts on the first day after your required waiting period. NMLS lets you pay for a new enrollment right after a failed attempt, but the window will not let you test before the wait is over.

Attempt that failedWait before your next attempt
1st30 calendar days
2nd30 calendar days
3rd180 calendar days, then the cycle starts over

Each attempt needs its own paid enrollment. Once you pass, you are not allowed to take the test again.

Step 3: Book your appointment with Prometric

The SAFE MLO test is delivered by Prometric at nearly 300 test centers in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. You have two ways to book:

  • Online, through NMLS. Log in, open Testing Home, select Manage Test Appointment, and click Schedule – Test Center. You will be redirected to Prometric to pick a location, date, and time. Online scheduling is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • By phone. Call Prometric at 1-877-671-6657, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

If you book directly with Prometric, have this ready:

  • Your legal first and last name, exactly as it appears on your NMLS account
  • Your address and daytime phone number
  • Your NMLS ID

Keep the confirmation number Prometric gives you. You need it to reschedule or cancel by phone. Your appointment date and test center city also show on the Manage Test Appointments page in NMLS.

Dates you cannot book

The handbook lists six holidays observed by all test centers: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Individual centers may also close for state or local holidays, and those dates simply will not appear when you search that center.

Booking for a team

Companies with five or more MLOs testing on the same date at the same center can use Prometric’s group appointment tool. It is not available to individuals, every candidate needs a paid enrollment, and the group cannot be scheduled until every person has accepted the Candidate Agreement.

What about testing from home?

This is where older advice is out of date. Effective October 1, 2024, NMLS and Prometric both state that online proctored testing is only available to candidates who qualify for testing accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you do not have an approved accommodation, plan on a Prometric test center.

If you do need an accommodation, at a center or online, get approval before you schedule. The handbook says to submit two forms to the NMLS Testing Accommodations team: the Testing Accommodations Eligibility Questionnaire (every time you make a new request) and the Testing Accommodations Verification Request Form (for an initial request, or a new accommodation or disability). NMLS says it makes reasonable efforts to decide within five business days, and there is no cost to you for approved modifications or aids. If NMLS asks for more documentation, the request stays pending for 30 days before you would have to reapply.

Rescheduling and cancelling: the deadline that costs people $110

NMLS policy requires you to cancel or reschedule by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, two calendar days before your appointment. You can do it on the NMLS Manage Test Appointments page, on the Prometric site, or by calling Prometric at 1-877-671-6657. Individual test centers cannot change appointments for you.

If your appointment is onChange it by 11:59 p.m. ET on
SundayThursday of the previous week
MondayFriday of the previous week
TuesdaySaturday of the previous week
WednesdaySunday of the same week
ThursdayMonday of the same week
FridayTuesday of the same week
SaturdayWednesday of the same week

One wrinkle: the SAFE MLO Testing FAQ words the same rule as "two business days." The handbook chapter and the table above use calendar days. The safe move is to make any change earlier than either version requires.

Miss the deadline, or do not show up, and NMLS closes your enrollment window and keeps the fee. You would have to request and pay for a new enrollment before you could schedule again. On test day, bring one current government-issued ID with your photo and signature. NMLS says the name on it has to match your NMLS account exactly. Our NMLS exam day guide covers the ID rules and check-in in detail.

If the test center closes

If a center cannot open, for weather or another reason, center staff contact candidates to reschedule without penalty. If the center opens late or closes early and you have waited at least 30 minutes, you can choose to stay and test with your full time, or reschedule without penalty.

If an emergency makes you miss it

NMLS offers a complimentary test enrollment for unavoidable personal hardships, such as a medical emergency, the birth of a child, or the death of an immediate family member. Workload, work conflicts, mechanical breakdowns, and not being prepared do not qualify. To request one:

  • Send a written request within 20 days of the original test date.
  • Include your full name, NMLS ID, contact information, the scheduled test date, the test location, and the reason.
  • Include documentation from an independent third party, such as a doctor’s note on letterhead, a hospital admission report, or a police report, all in a single mailing.
  • Mail it to the NMLS Complimentary Enrollment Coordinator, or email NMLS_FieldSupport@finra.org.

NMLS says it will respond in writing within 20 days of receiving the request. Do not buy a new enrollment while you wait: if you do, NMLS treats the complimentary request as void and does not refund the new fee.

When to schedule

The 180-day window is long, but it closes on its own, so match your booking to how ready you are. A few practical rules:

  • Do not pay until you have a study plan. The clock starts the day you pay, not the day you book.
  • Book a date you can keep. Changing it is free only until the two-day cutoff, so pick a time when work and family are least likely to get in the way.
  • Plan for the full visit. The test is 190 minutes, but the appointment runs 225 minutes, and the handbook says to arrive 30 minutes early.
  • Book when your practice scores are consistently above 75%. That is the passing score, and the real test has 120 questions, 115 of them scored. Try our free NMLS SAFE practice test to see where you stand.
  • Leave yourself room for a retake. If you fail, the 30-day wait still has to fit inside your licensing timeline.

If you are still mapping out the whole process, start with how to get an MLO license. The SAFE test is one step, along with education, the background and credit check, and sponsorship.

After you test

In most cases you see your score and a pass or fail result on screen, and the center hands you a printed score report before you leave. NMLS posts the official score to your NMLS record about 72 hours later. A passing result stays valid as long as you do not go five consecutive years without a state license or active federal registration. If you do, you have to retest.

Frequently asked questions

How do I schedule the NMLS SAFE exam?

First pay the $110 test enrollment in NMLS under Testing Home, Pay for Test, National Test with UST, and accept the Candidate Agreement. Then go to Manage Test Appointment and click Schedule – Test Center to book with Prometric online, or call Prometric at 1-877-671-6657.

How long do I have to take the SAFE test after paying?

You have 180 days from when NMLS processes your payment. You must accept the Candidate Agreement, schedule, and take the test inside that window. If it closes, you have to pay for a new enrollment.

Can I take the NMLS SAFE exam online at home?

Only with an approved ADA testing accommodation. Since October 1, 2024, online proctored testing is limited to candidates who qualify for testing accommodations. Everyone else tests at a Prometric test center.

How late can I reschedule my SAFE test appointment?

The MLO Testing Handbook requires changes by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, two calendar days before the appointment. For a Thursday test, that means Monday night. The FAQ says two business days, so changing earlier is safest. Late changes and no-shows forfeit the fee.

Do I need to finish my 20 hours of pre-licensing education before I schedule?

No. NMLS does not require you to complete pre-licensing education before you take the test. You still need at least 20 hours of approved education, plus any state-specific hours, to get licensed.

What happens if I miss my SAFE test appointment?

Your enrollment window closes and you lose the $110 fee. If an unavoidable emergency caused it, you can send NMLS a written request for a complimentary enrollment within 20 days of the test date, with third-party documentation.

Show up ready on test day

Scheduling is the easy part. The 190 minutes after you sit down are what decide whether you pay that $110 once or twice. MLO Pass is exam prep, not an NMLS-approved PE course, so it does not count toward your education hours. A one-time $99 unlock gives you about 1,154 questions across all five domains: Mortgage Loan Origination Activities 27%, Federal Mortgage-Related Laws 24%, General Mortgage Knowledge 20%, Ethics 18%, and Uniform State Content 11%. Pay once and keep it for life, with no subscription. Use code MLOPASS for a $20 credit at checkout. Sign up to pass your test
